Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was a Norwegian expressionist painter and a pioneer of modern expressionist painting. His childhood was marred by illness, bereavement, and fear of inherited family mental illness. His intense, evocative treatment of psychological distress was a major influence on the growth of German expressionism in the early 20th century, and his most famous work, The Scream, is one of the iconic images of contemporary art.
