Edvard Munch's late 1910s
"The Scream" is undoubtedly Munch's most famous theme. It belongs to a series of themes that Munch developed in Berlin and Ösgårdsstrand in the 1890s. Munch later named the series "Life Ribbons" and described the group of paintings as a poem about love, life and death.
Munch created several editions of "The Scream". Two of them are paintings, one belongs to the National Gallery in Oslo and the other belongs to the Munch Museum.
"The Scream" is based on an experience Munch had while walking with two friends in Ekbegensen, a suburb of Christiania. He described his experience in several articles:
I was out for a walk with two friends - the sun was setting - and suddenly the sky turned blood red - I stopped, feeling exhausted, leaning against the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire over the blue-black fjords and the city - my friends kept going, and I stood there, shaking with anxiety - I felt the endless screams of nature.
The Scream is interpreted as a psychic illusion of modern anxious humans, for whom God is dead and materialism offers no comfort.
Continuously copied, caricatured and commercialized in many ways, the theme is undoubtedly one of the most famous in the art world. Its popularity is a testament to its universality and shows that there is still a strong interest in it even today.
