Collected at the Brera Gallery in Milan.

Conscripted in 1915, Giorgio Morandi fell seriously ill and was discharged from the hospital just two months later. Despite his poor health, he returned to work, reflecting on his previous avant-garde experiments and exploring the meaning of new metaphysical works.

In his paintings of the three-year period 1916-19, Morandi chose sharp lines, chiseled surfaces and colors, and almost abstract geometric shapes. If some recurring themes in metaphysics appear in Morandi's work, such as mannequins, it seems that they do so mainly for structural reasons. However, Morandi's metaphysics is precisely reflected in the formal composition and choice of subject matter: in his still-life paintings, objects of everyday life are presented in delineated spaces, divorced from their context, divorced from their function, evoking a existence that exists outside the world. Space-time, the mystery lies in the essence itself. If in some paintings, such as Natura morta con palla (1918), the influence of metaphysics is more pronounced, in others, such as Fiori (1918), one can almost feel the conflict between the ordered and rarefied reality and the disorganized organic life.
