At the time, this landscape was an unusual and brave depiction of Klimt's beloved Lake Atter.

Bravely, the entire water surface is depicted here as an almost abstract color composition, covering most of the painting. 

With a degree of freedom, Klimt depicted the waves as turquoise-colored spots that gradually contracted towards the top of the frame, suggesting an illusion of depth.

The black treetops of the island of Litzlberg in the upper right corner are the only visible objects on the horizon. Of all Klimt's landscapes, this is Klimt's deepest exploration of abstract art.

This unusual turquoise color is reminiscent of the paintings of the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet's contemporaries, while also paying homage to the unique topographical features of Lake Arte, which takes on this color on summer mornings.
