This is the only painting by Matisse to depict the exterior of his Issa studio. The blue windows were made in Henry and Emily Matisse's second-floor bedroom, where their house is located on an adjacent plot. Through the windows, one can see the studio nestled among the surrounding trees (painted blue, like a dresser, walls and sky). The studio's distinctive sloping roof and chimney are also blue, while the yellow color of the building's exterior connects it to the objects on the tables. On a plane, Matisse connects inside and out, home to work, life to art.
