During Faust's time, Matisse often painted landscapes in the south of France in the summer and developed ideas there into larger works upon his return to Paris. His second important work of the imagination, The Joy of Life, is typical of this. He provided the backdrop for the idyllic with a landscape painting he did in Colliore, but it was also influenced by Watteau, Poussin, Japanese woodcuts, Persian miniatures and 19th century Orientalist harem images. The scene consists of separate themes arranged into a complete composition. The huge oil painting and its stunning colours received mixed reviews at the Salon des Pendants in India. Critics took note of its new style - a vast field of color and linear graphics - in a clear rejection of Paul Signac's famous pointillism.

The Joy of Life is a large-scale painting (almost 6 feet high and 8 feet wide) depicting an Acadian landscape filled with colourful forests, meadows, seas and skies, with nude figures in stillness and motion. As with earlier Faustian canvases, colour responds only to the emotional expression and need for form of the canvas, not to natural reality. References are numerous, but in form and date Bonheur de Vivre comes closest to Cezanne's last great image of the bather.
