"Piano Lessons" depicts Matisse in the living room of his home in Issy les Moulineaux, with his eldest son Pierre at the piano, the artist's sculpture "Decorative Figures" (1908) in the lower left corner, and his painting "Woman on a High Stool" in the upper right corner. Matisse begins with a naturalistic painting, but he eliminates details as he works, scraping off areas and reconstructing them in a vast color gamut. The painting evokes a specific moment - the light suddenly opens up in the dark interior - through the triangular shadows on the boy's face and the rhyming green triangular light that falls on the garden. The artist's cutouts in the window frame and stipples on the left create a potholed texture, suggesting the eroding effects of light or time. The burning candles on the metronome and piano reiterate this theme.

The Piano Lesson is a highly abstract painting that is important because of its connection to the Cubist grid developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, because of its biographical aspects, and especially because of its thoughtful iconography (symbolic content).

Matisse reworked the original painting to cast Reinall as the strict instructor, and Matisse often created variations on subjects he had already dealt with. So, in fact, Matisse created a painting and a sculpture. This suggests that perhaps The Piano Lesson is not just about Pierre and his childhood experiences, but more importantly, about the creation itself. Is Pierre really a stand-in for Henri? After all, music is a common metaphor for the visual arts. So, is Matisse saying that art is the result of sensual creativity (sculpture) and strict discipline (painting) - with the metronome swinging in between as a medium? So, what about the engraved music stand with the piano brand "PLEYEL" (what we see is read upside down)?
