Claude Monet (1840-1926) painted the famous Rouen Cathedral in Normandy more than thirty times. Now scattered in private and public collections around the world, from Tokyo to Los Angeles, each canvas captures the exterior of the cathedral at different times of day and in different weather, tracing the changing light on the stone of the medieval building.
Monet went to Rouen twice to paint the cathedral, once in the early spring of 1892 and again in the spring of 1893. He painted two canvases outdoors, depicting a side of the cathedral and showing the cluttered dwellings built on the side of the Albanata.
He painted in these locations all day, working long hours over time on multiple canvases in cramped conditions. He did not complete all the cathedral paintings in Rouen, but after leaving Rouen he continued to work in Giverny's spacious studio until 1894.
Throughout his career, Monet tended to paint the same subjects over and over again. From the 1890s onwards, he began actively working on a series of paintings in both the city and the countryside: a haystack in a field near Giverny's house; a row of poplar trees along the nearby River Epte; the Houses of Parliament in London; churches and palaces in Venice; a Japanese bridge in his garden; and multiple paintings of water lilies. Each is an exercise in capturing the atmosphere between Monet and his subjects, the different weather conditions, and the effects of light, humidity, brightness, shadows, and haze.
