    In 1866, Claude Monet began to paint a large painting in the garden of his rented house on the outskirts of Paris. He was faced with a double challenge: first, to work in the open air, which meant putting the canvas into the ditches by means of pulleys, so that he could work in the upper part without changing his point of view; and second, to produce the large format usually used for historical works. But his real goal was elsewhere: to find out how to blend the figures into the landscape and give the impression that air and light moved around them.

    Monet found a solution by painting shadows, colorful light, sunlight shining through leaves, and pale reflections glowing in the dark.

    Emile Zola wrote in the salon's report: "The sun shines directly on the dazzling white dress; the warm shadow of the trees cuts a chunk of grey from the path and the dress in the sun. This is the strangest effect imaginable. One needs to love one's time especially to dare to do such a thing, the fabric is cut in half by the shadow and the sun".

    The faces are obscured and cannot be considered portraits. Camille, the artist's companion, takes a photo of the three figures on the left. Cleverly rendering the white of the dresses, Monet anchored them firmly in the structure of the composition - a symphony of greens and browns - provided by the central tree and path.

    After the painting was completed in the studio, it was rejected by the jury of the 1867 Salon, who, in addition to the lack of theme and narrative, lamented the apparent brushstrokes as careless and incomplete representations. One member of the jury declared: "Too many young people just want to keep going in this hateful direction. It is time to protect them and save art!"
