After returning from England in 1871, Monet settled in Argenteuil, where he lived until 1878. These years were fulfilling for him. With the support of dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, Monet discovered bright landscapes near his home, which allowed him to explore the potential of outdoor painting.

In 1874, he presented poppy fields to the public at the first Impressionist exhibition in photographer Nadar's abandoned studio. The painting is now one of the most famous in the world, reminiscent of the vibrant atmosphere of a summer stroll through the fields.

Monet toned down the silhouette and started with a drop of poppy, building a colorful rhythm with drops of paint; the disproportionate chunks in the foreground suggest he put visual impression first. A step towards abstraction.

In the landscape, a mother and child pair in the foreground and another in the background are just excuses for drawing diagonal lines that make up this painting. Two separate color zones are established, one dominated by red and the other by turquoise. The young woman and child with a parasol in the foreground may be the artist's wife Camille and their son Jean.
