Cezanne depicted bathers beginning in the 1870s, and included many works by male and female bathers, both individually and collectively. Later in life, he painted three large group portraits of female bathers. In addition to the National Gallery paintings, they are now in the collections of the Barnes Foundation in Merrion, Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. At the time of his death, he seemed to be working on all three simultaneously.
In these works, Cézanne reinterpreted the long tradition of artists such as Titian and Poussin depicting nude figures in landscape painting. While the themes of their work were drawn from classical mythology, Cézanne did not use direct literary sources. Instead, his central theme was to express the harmony of the figure with the landscape through solid forms, rigid architectural structures, and the earth tones of the body. When the painting was exhibited in 1907, it became the inspiration for the nascent Cubist movement. Both Picasso and Matisse took a keen interest in it.
