Before Gauguin concluded his work in Tahiti, he moved from a symbolic painting agenda to a focus on the beauty and tranquil beauty of the local women. In this painting, he relies on sculptural forms, gestures and facial expressions to vividly express the emotions he uses to describe the "night in Tahiti": "very subtle, very aware of her innocence", while "still being able to walk naked without feeling ashamed". "The two figures first appeared in the artist's monumental carving tape Faa Iheihe (Tahiti priest) from 1898 (Tate Gallery, London), and again in the larger 1899 rupee (Pushkin Gallery, Moscow), which he created for the upcoming 1900 World's Fair.
