"Siesta" is a painting by Paul Gauguin from 1892 to 1894, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It was painted during Gauguin's first long trip to Tahiti.
The unpretentious painting depicts a group of Tahitian women in Western dress chatting in the shade of a loggia on a hot afternoon sun. One of the women is ironing clothes. While the subject matter is an aspect of everyday life, Gauguin worked on the canvas for a long time, making some changes - for example the shopping bag in the foreground was formerly a dog.
