Van Gogh painted two very similar "Cypress Trees in a Rye". One is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, USA, and the other is in the National Gallery of England.

Van Gogh once wrote: "I have always had the cypress tree in my mind, and I would love to paint it like a sunflower. But it is strange why no one has painted it as I see it. The lines and proportions of the cypress tree are indeed beautiful, like an Egyptian maid."

In the time of Saint Remy, Van Gogh shifted the focus of his creation to the expression of the body. "Cypress in the Rye" does not have a sharp contrast of colors, but instead is a twisting shape formed by curves.
