The work, now in the Hermitage Museum in St. Pittsburgh, dated 1908-1912, depicts a scene of Matisse talking to his wife, wearing a blue-and-white striped cardigan, while his wife, Emily, sits on the right, against a backdrop of intensely colored blue walls and a picturesque garden outside the window. In this period of creation, Matisse abandoned the wild, instinctive use of the paintbrush in favor of a more peaceful, decorative picture.
Art historian Hilary Spring called the painting a profound insight into the relationship between Matisse, the painting, and his wife, because when Matisse first met Emily in 1897, he warned his future wife that he loved her, but that he would always love painting more.
