Goldfish were introduced to Europe from East Asia in the 17th century. Beginning around 1912, goldfish became a recurring theme in Henri Matisse's work. They appeared in nine of his paintings, as well as in his paintings and prints. The Goldfish (1912) belongs to a series made by Matisse between the spring and early summer of 1912. The color of the goldfish immediately caught our attention. The bright orange contrasts strongly with the more subtle pinks and greens and teal background surrounding the tank. Blue and orange, along with green and red, are complementary colors that appear even brighter when put together. This technique was widely used by Fauvism, and was particularly noticeable in Matisse's early canvas, A Good Time to Live. Although he later softened the palette, the bold orange is reminiscent of Matisse's Fauvism days, which continued to influence his use of color throughout his career.

But why was Henry Matisse so interested in goldfish? A clue can be found during his visit to Tangier, Morocco, where he lived from late January to April 1912. He noticed that the locals would dream for hours every day, gazing into the goldfish bowl.
