Henri Matisse is a truly world-class artist, and his "Portrait of Madame Matisse" alias "The Green Line", which depicts his wife Amelie Matisse, is a masterpiece of twentieth-century portraiture and one of the ten highlights of the National Gallery of Denmark.
The National Gallery of Denmark houses one of the largest and most important Matisse collections in the world outside France. During World War I, Copenhagen was home to two of Matisse's main collectors, and paintings brought to Denmark from this period will form the basis of the National Gallery of Denmark's important collection.
Portrait of Madame Matisse. The Green Line is an important work of art because it shows how a painting can be made large and powerfully expressive with very little, simple equipment. The strong contrast of colors is typical of Matisse's early twentieth-century paintings, which gives this small painting (40.5 x 32.5 cm) a powerful visual force.
The painting may have been painted in the fall of 1905, when Matisse returned to Paris after spending the summer in the fishing village of Colliur in southern France. There, he and his friend André Derain plunged into even more frantic painting experiments, trying to free color from its descriptive function and make it an independent force, "said Dorthe Aagesen, chief curator and senior researcher. In fact, Henri Matisse made a major breakthrough in 1905, thanks in part to works created that summer in the company of André Derain.
modernity
Portrait of Mrs. Matisse. The green line has many features that are immediately recognizable from the real world, and it is not a naturalistic depiction of the artist's wife. Matisse does not seek to depict as accurately as possible what he sees, nor is he concerned with showing specific aspects of his model or creating a psychological portrait. The painting is also not about the relationship between him and his wife; it is about the relationship between him and his wife. Rather, it seeks to convey an inner experience. The green line divides the face into warm and cold halves, creating a flat effect that gives the portrait mask a sense of abstraction.
"Every stroke is carefully arranged, and this painting is a great example of how to experiment with portrait format. It illustrates how people manipulate and control meaning, how to arrange things, and also shows the impact of what you don't say. This provides a useful perspective on how we use images today," says Dolt Auguson.
Stein and the Danish Collector
Besides being an important masterpiece of portraiture, this painting has an interesting story to tell. It first came under Danish ownership after the First World War. At that time, the portrait of Madame Matisse. The Green Line was acquired by businessperson Christian Tetzen. His collection was disbanded in the 1920s, but he kept this particular portrait until his death in 1936, the National Gallery of Denmark, bought it when selling the estate.
Another major Danish Matisse collector from this period was Johannes Rump, who purchased several works from the collection of Christian Tetzen-Lund, who donated most of the museum's collection of French art.
Before arriving in Denmark, the painting was part of the famous Stein Collection in Paris. From 1905 to World War I, American art collectors Michael Stein, his wife Sarah, and Michael's siblings Gertrude Stein and Leo Stein collected important paintings from Paris and exhibited them in their private homes.
"The photo of Michael and Sarah Stein's apartment shows us that the painting hangs prominently in their living room. Dorthe Aagesen said:" The book was well known at the time and was among the works that helped Henri Matisse build his reputation. "
