Femme au chapau, first exhibited at the Paris Motor Salon in 1905, was at the center of a controversy over the naming of Fauvism, the first modern art movement of the 20th century. The term "beast" was coined by an art critic and is forever associated with artists who exhibited brightly colored canvases in the Grand Palais' central gallery, known as the Central Cage.
Chapel Women marked a stylistic shift from the canonical brushstrokes of Matisse's early works to a more expressive personal style. His use of non-naturalistic colors and loose brushstrokes created a cursory or "unfinished" quality that seemed to shock audiences at the time.
The bust was photographed by the artist's wife, Amélie. She was dressed in an elaborate outfit that had classic French bourgeois characteristics: a fan in her gloved arm and an elaborate hat on her head. The vibrant hues of her outfit, however, were purely expressive; when asked about the hues of what Madame Matisse was actually wearing for the portrait, the artist replied: "Black, of course."
Shortly after the painting was first exhibited, the expatriate Stein family (Michael, Sara, Leo, and Gertrude) bought the painting. Although Leo described the work as "the dirtiest paint I've ever seen," the Steins recognized its importance and began to sponsor the French artist on a long-term basis. Sara and Michael Stein then brought the painting to San Francisco, where it was bought by the Haas family in the 1950s. In 1990, Elise S. Haas bequeathed to the museum 37 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by modernist masters, including Femme au chapau.
