Picasso's Last Self-Portrait was painted on June 30, 1972, at the age of 91, nine months before his death.

In this crayon painting, Picasso created a daunting image: eyes that seemed to widen in fear, lips closed, and a gaunt face with starkly protruding cheekbones - a far cry from his face that actually looked like a bowling ball. This is Picasso's depiction of his heart, a man gazing into the abyss of death and contemplating his life with regret.

Picasso had shown this intimidating portrait to his friend Pierre Dykes. He picked up the painting, held it up in front of him, then put it down again, saying nothing. Dykes later explained: "I suddenly felt that he was facing his own death, like a brave Spaniard. It was not pure courage, but courage driven by conviction. Since his work is similar to everyday life, it is also expected that the premonition of his death will be reflected in the picture." Picasso, a generation of talented masters, died in France on April 8, 1973, at the age of 92.
