In the first half of 1932, Pablo Picasso dedicated himself to painting a series of masterpieces depicting his lover, Marie Thérèse Walter. In 1927, when Picasso first met near the general merchandise company, he was enchanted by the young blonde. The painting depicts an intimate close-up of Marie Thérèse's head as she slept, a passive state that would become a hallmark of her paintings. Marie Thérèse's face, her figure, and her sleep itself prompted Picasso to create some of the most lyrical and sensual works.

In 1932, at the age of 50, Picasso was at the peak of his artistic achievements. The George Petit Gallery in Paris and the Zurich Museum of Art in Switzerland held retrospectives of Picasso's works, which were the first public appearances of Picasso's works in art museums since 1911. On January 24, 1932, Picasso created "Dreams," one of a series of reclining female nudes inspired by his lover Teresa for the Paris retrospective.

At that time, Picasso was facing an unhappy marriage with the ballerina Olga and a secret love affair with the young Teresa. Although Teresa's identity was not made public until 1958, Picasso's 30 new paintings of colorful, plump nudes of women for the retrospective are all depictions of his secret lover. Picasso, who left decisively after the original wife saw the clue, will never see him again until death.
