This painting was created in 1915 and is a work of Picasso's Comprehensive Cubism period (1912-1916).
It depicts a harlequin in colorful clothing and a black mask, sitting in a chair with a violin in his hand, against the backdrop of several geometric shapes on a wall.
During this period, color was re-emphasized, with shades of gray, yellow-green, and light yellow appearing, and collage was used to collage photos, newspapers, wallpaper, wood grain paper, buttons, and other similar materials into different-shaped blocks. Here, the focus of the painter is still the problem of basic form. During the three-dimensional analysis period, some geometric small blocks were replaced by artists with newspapers, photos, and other objects, transforming the basic shapes and blocks into objective images. A piece of gray-red paper, cut slightly, and pasted on the screen becomes a musical instrument, a strand of hair, and a watch chain, which outline the image of a person. Therefore, the artist's production process during this period tended to be more general and concise. This collage of artistic language is the main symbol of comprehensive cubist painting.
