"Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (French: Les Demoiselles d'Avignon; Spanish: Las señoritas de Aviñon) is one of the masterpieces of the Spanish painter Barbero Picasso, painted in a Spanish brothel in 1907. Avignon is a street in Barcelona. At first Picasso wanted to paint a few prostitutes on the street, but finally he painted five semi-abstract nude girls and a group of still lifes. The three girls on the left are Spanish women who are more close to nature, while the two on the right appear to be wearing African masks. According to Picasso, these masks were designed to show a strong, almost wild power.
This painting abandons perspective in favor of flat-panel Primitivist painting. This original Cubist painting is considered to be one of the origins of later Cubism and modern art. The painting was so controversial that even Picasso's friends were critical of it. Matisse thought the painting was just a bad joke, and Georges Braque initially disliked the painting, but later did a lot of research on it. In addition, the similarities between this work and Cezanne's "Bathers", Gauguin's "Barbarians" and Greco's "Opening the Fifth Seal" have also been widely discussed by later critics.
The work, done in "The Washing Boat," was first shown to the public in 1916 at the Salon d'Antin, organized by the Frenchman André Salmon, who mentioned it in 1912. He also gave the now-popular "Maiden of Avignon" a title to replace the original "Le Bordel d'Avigno," which Picasso often called "my brothel," and never liked Salmon's title.
