Broadway Jazz is the last painting completed by Mondrian. In the early stages of its origin, two paintings from 1942 in the Newman collection, it still shows many points of overlap with the painting precedent New York City I. In preliminary studies, the rhythm of the painting is determined by the long lines of the grid, while other accents indicate the insertion of small unbound color ribbons, where Mondrian created paintings from his final years in Europe. An example of a painting that has changed so much is The Composition of London, which, in its current state, must be roughly the same as the Broadway Boogie-Wu sketch after Mondrian altered it in New York.

During the completion of Broadway Jazz, the same process took place as in the last adaptation of Composition London. The painting initially seems to be based on lines running through it, mainly yellow (closely related to New York City I in this respect) and some connecting bands of different colors, which led to a change in direction and proportion. In this basic composition, small pieces of red, blue, gray, and sometimes the same yellow as the traverse lines were added, giving the whole work a new rhythm, a completely unexpected movement, a hopping staccato rhythm. This new rhythm is perhaps the most striking aspect. Mondrian's early paintings were composed of continuous long lines and large planes, which can be compared to full or half music notes in music, and now smaller forms have emerged, which can be compared to eight music notes and sixteen music notes. This innovation apparently took place when Mondrian created this painting, giving the canvas a new, sparkling vitality.
