Mondrian began his work around the beginning of the 20th century, and his work seems to have been influenced by Impressionism, as well as the bold use of colour by Fauvist painters such as Henri Matisse and Gauguin. Prior to the First World War, Mondrian's work was still fairly representative, but it already hinted at the abstraction for which he was best known. But the outbreak of war seemed to change Mondrian's work forever. Composition C, Red Yellow and Blue, is a good example of how he dealt with the political and social consequences of war through his work.

Arriving in London in 1938, Mondrian confirmed that London was the center of the avant-garde. In 1936, he exhibited this and other works at "Abstract and Figurative," London's first international exhibition of abstract art.

Mondrian's non-figurative paintings - black and white primary color planes - convey what he describes as a "dynamic balance" that he hopes will reflect the individual spirit and have broader social significance.
