The composition of red, blue and yellow is dominated by a large red rectangle. This type was developed by Piet Mondrian around 1930, and the edges of the painting are defined by two wide subdivision strips. The crisscrossing black bars move away from the center and meet in the lower left corner. The dark blue and lemon yellow are separated by the off-white surface, forming a counterpoint to the red music note.
