In the late 19th century, Mondrian continued to paint and develop the traditional Dutch style, fusing elements of Impressionism with the ideas of Vincent van Gogh, ignoring the fundamental changes in the art around him.

After completing a formal art course, Mondrian practiced painting and watercolour from life, as these were the foundations of all traditional art. Mondrian lived with his parents in Winterswick from the autumn of 1898 to the summer of 1899, recovering from pneumonia. He spent time sketching in the surrounding area and often created watercolours for his paintings. Even when Mondrian was in traditional work, his understanding of balance, harmony and decorative effects was evident. Mondrian's landscapes from this period can often be compared to the work of other contemporary artists, such as Gustav Klimt. The 1899 Beech Wood is similar to Klimt's Birch Forest and contains elements of the Art Nouveau movement.
