Sorrowing old man ('At Eternity's Gate')

At the end of April 1890, van Gogh was recovering from another deep depression. He wanted to get back to work as soon as possible and decided to redo several figure paintings from his time in Brabant. One of them was At Eternity's Gate, a painting he created in The Hague in 1882 that used Etten motifs.

In times of low spirits, van Gogh often felt the urge to redo a painting or a painting. Then he began to think he hadn't done enough and had to keep learning. But he was also curious what would happen to the work he copied from Brabant now that he had developed a completely different style.

Van Gogh modified the composition of the work and may have used elements from the interior of a mental hospital, such as chairs and a stove. He also appears to have asked a patient from the mental hospital to pose for the elderly.
