"Cypress-way under a stary sky", also known as "Country road in Provence by night"

For Van Gogh, the cypress was the ultimate symbol of Provence. "The cypresses still upset me," he wrote to his younger brother Theo, "I wanted to do something with them, like a canvas for painting sunflowers, because to my surprise no one has finished them as I have seen them done." Its lines and proportions are beautiful, like an Egyptian obelisk. The green color has such a superior quality.

Shortly before he left the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted the country road at night in Provence. It was not a ready-made landscape. It was his own creation, presumably a final reminder of Saint-Rémy and a summation of the many impressions he received during his stay in Provence.

Rotating line

Van Gogh experimented with color and brushstrokes in Saint-Rémy. Many of the works are composed of graceful forms and swirling lines. The same is true here. Short, rhythmic, wavy brushstrokes placed side by side give the painting great vitality.
