After spending time in mental hospitals in the south of France, Arles, and Saint-Rémy-en-Provence, Vincent van Gogh settled in Orville-sur-Oise, just outside Paris.
Fearing for his health, his brother Theo advised him to see Dr. Gachet, himself a painter and friend of many artists, who agreed to treat him. In the two months between his arrival on May 21, 1890, and his death on July 29, the artist produced some 70 paintings, more than one a day, not to mention numerous sketches.
This is the only painting to represent the Orville Church in its entirety, and can sometimes stand out against the backdrop of views throughout the village. Built in the 13th century in an early Gothic style, flanked by two Romanesque churches, this church becomes a magnificent monument in the painter's pen, on the verge of breaking off the ground and two paths that seem to cling to it like torrents of lava or mud.
If you compare this painting with Claude Monet's painting of the cathedral in Rouen shortly after, you can see how Van Gogh's approach differs from that of the Impressionists. Unlike Monet, he did not attempt to render light and shadow on the monument. Although the church is still recognizable, the painting does not provide the viewer with a faithful image of reality, but a form of "expression" of the church.
Van Gogh used artistic means that were ahead of the works of Fauvism and Expressionist painters.
