Cave 217 was built in the early Tang Dynasty during the Jinglong period (707-710), which was the turn of the early and prosperous Tang Dynasties in the history of Dunhuang.

On the south wall of Cave 217, there is a picture of chanting sutras on the right side of the "Fa Hua Sutra Transformation". The upper part is depicted with Sakyamuni's saying, and the lower part is depicted with eight monks sitting on a carpet, with a small square table in the middle. There are scriptures on the table, and the monks are discussing the scriptures devoutly, enthusiastically, and seriously.
