The Crouching Woman, created in 1954, sold for $36.875 million at auction at Christie's in New York on November 13, 2017. On October 8, 1954, at the age of 73, Picasso completed three oil portraits of his lover, 27-year-old Jacqueline Roque (1927-1986), in his studio in southern France, depicting her with her arms folded and knees curled up on the ground. The bold use of the painting reflects the influence of French painter Henri Matisse in his later years.

The painting, one of three large easel canvases of the same size created by Picasso on October 8, depicts a rich portrait celebrating the artist's new mistress and proclaiming her newly established proud place in the artist's life and work.

Jacqueline and Picasso met in 1953, with an age difference of 46 years. Picasso created more than 400 paintings for her. The exaggerated neck, dark eyes, and towering cheekbones are all characteristics of Picasso's Jacqueline. In 1961, Jacqueline became Picasso's second wife and accompanied him through the last years of his life.
